Lauren hoped Maxie wouldn't put her off. It was the middle of the morning after all.
"Shouldn't you be in school about now?" Maxie served her and Fletch the last of the scones. She had to be grateful for that.
"Revisions. I revise all the time, you know." She said sensibly as she stirred more milk in her tea.
"Yes, of course you do." But he didn't sound as if he believed her.
"Look, here's the deal." Lauren got to the point. "Fletch needs a place and I'm willing to be here every step of the way. I won't let him cause any trouble. Honest. Its just, do you have anything cheap. It'll be the cheapest or I can't afford it."
"You?" Maxie winced. "And is there any love in any of this for you. You know, do kiss and tell."
"Kiss and tell?" Lauren squinted. "No. Its not like that."
"But won't it?" Maxie looked at her seriously. "You'll be sharing a room together, now won't you?"
"Yeah, but-" Lauren shook her head, no. "I'm just a mate, trying to get him back on track. That's all."
"I'm just trying to reason here, your objective." Maxie nodded.
"There has to be one?" Lauren fumed a bit by all his questions.
"Its just..... its an awful small room in the maid's quarters, and well, you sure you're up for something like that?" Maxie got up then and walked her down the hall past where Jamie was staying. He took a turn down to the basement. It was rather dim down below. And there it was, like a cave with two thin beds against the walls. It felt more like a prison cell. But there was a sink and a restroom just down the hallway to use.
"Could we brighten it up a bit?" Lauren then asked.
"Sure, be my guest." Maxie smiled.
"Well, then, you have a deal, right?" Lauren offered a handshake then, and Maxie took it.
